Gerd Spier's story reaches from the sink to the stars.
"When Gerd Spier arrived in New York from his native Germany in 1963 he got a job washing dishes. He also was a truck driver, moved to Alaska, and eventually entered the University of California at Berkeley to study math and engineering. With a bachelor's and master's degree in hand, he became an engineer for NASA and worked on missions to Mars. "I wasn't convinced I could be successful at any business, especially this one," he recalls, "but I didn't want to miss the chance, just in case it did work for me. An ongoing income would allow me to go back to school for a Ph.D. in mathematics." Patricia grew up in Mexico and studied for two careers, tourist administration and secretary. She helped organize the 1986 World Cup soccer games there and became an executive secretary for a major bank. The Spier business is growing strongly in Mexico, of course, and reaches into many other countries as well. "Personal growth is a real product of this business," says the engineer. "I've learned that I can control my future. And of course, enjoy life and have fun."
