“Our son was embarrassed that his father, a physician, would be doing this. But then he joined us.”
“We weren’t really interested when a friend showed us this opportunity,” says Jim King, “but we didn’t know how to say ‘no’ politely, so we registered. Later we looked at it and realized that the business made sense.” The Kings were already world travelers. Mary was a registered nurse and had worked in Guam, Colombia and Guatemala. Jim had been Chief of Surgery for the government of Guam, a Peace Corps physician in South and Central America, Director of Family Health Services for the Pan American Health Organization, and Deputy Director, Office of International Health, U.S. Public Health Service. “Our oldest son did his best to get us out of the business,” Jim remembers. “He was embarrassed that his father, a physician, would be doing this. But later he decided to join us. Now all our sons are working with us. Mary was able to begin to do more things. And I could retire while I was still young enough to enjoy life.
