Herren, John & Maria

"The furniture was gone. There was just a red phone in the middle of the floor."
"For three years before starting their business, John and Maria Herren worked 10-12 hours a day, seven days a week without any time off in what John calls a "big-time rut." He had an MBA and operated real estate offices in California's Monterey Peninsula. Maria was a secretary and property manager. They were hard-working enterprising people, but when they were away on a business trip a few months after starting their own business, they returned to find that their real estate partner had filed bankruptcy in their absence. "I went to the office and found that it was closed. The furniture and filing cabinets were gone. There was just a red phone in the middle of the floor. Maria said we had enough in savings to last three months if I wanted to do the business full-time. We went right to work." Maria recalls that John loved to chaperone school outings when the kids were young. "After about the third time, when he was the only father there, one of our daughter's little friends said, "Gina, your daddy is so nice."
