"We have a new dimension of friendship with our children that's exciting."

"John Hangebrauck was 35 when he told his banker he was going to quit his job and devote full time to building a business. "You're too young to retire," said the banker. "I didn't know it took age," John retorted. "I thought it took money." He left the manger deep in thought. John often donates blood at the Stanford Hospital (he has the rarest of blood types) and the nurses comment on his low blood pressure. "What do you do?" they ask. Good question. John says he began his business to create a retirement income and because "it looked like a challenge." He had been with General Electric and McDonnell Aircraft and was a sales engineer in electronic systems, "a career with a limitation on income." Carol was a special education teacher and wanted to make an extra $1,000 a month. "I was feeling anxious at the time. We'd just had our second child and John's job was tenuous. I just didn't want to go back to work." She never did. They've been able to send their three children to private schools and let them pick their colleges. "They're all in the business with us now," says John, "and we have a new dimension of friendship with them that's exciting."
