Brief History

Neal Maaskant, a second cousin of Jay Van Andel sponsored Jay and Rich DeVos in August 29, 1949 as distributors for Nutrilite Products, Inc. In September, they incorporated as the Ja-Ri Corporation. By 1958, Nutrilite was experiencing management problems. That summer, Jay and Rich decided they needed to develop a product line on the side to protect their distributors. In the fall, their distributors voted to become the American Way Association. In early 1959, Amway Corporation came into official being. They broke away from Nutrilite in 1961. In 1972, Amway bought a controlling interest in Nurtilite. They now own it, outright.

Founders Emeralds, (Neal and Charlotte) Maaskant (Maaskant Family Trust) receive the pass-up income from Ja-Ri. What follows is their legacy:

Leg 1

Their first leg begins with Emeralds Jack and Jean Maaskant. This leg is responsible for a good portion of Amway’s Asian and Australian business.

They sponsor Triple Diamonds Vince and Alice Gaffey, (together with son Tom and his wife Debbie they are "Gaffey & Gaffey") who sponsor Diamonds Rubin and Loraine Seagren. They, in turn sponsor Founders Emeralds (Bill) and Julie (now with daughter, Grace) Jordan, who sponsored Bill’s brother Larry. (Larry and his wife Linda are retired Emeralds doing missionary work in Mexico.) A very young Larry Jordan sponsored a much older Amway legend, Bob Stonelake.

Diamonds, (Bob and Lois) Stonelake went on to develop five Diamond legs and then Bob sold his business and went into retirement. Four of those legs contain Crowns and above. One, personally sponsored Crown Ambassadors, John and Pat Hendrickson, is believed to have been part of a group of Diamonds who bought Bob’s business.

A second leg goes down through (entertainment personalities) Diamonds Fred and Jan Sanborn, Emeralds James and Marsha Agnor and Henry and Dorothy Gordon to Executive Diamonds (and movie executive) Johnny and Jo Edwin. Edwin sponsored actress Joan Beaird, who sponsored her parents, Crowns, Wayne and Kay Beaird. (They are now partners with Joan and her husband, Olympic champion, Bob Richards.)

Edwin had a second Crown leg. It went through movie personalities, Emerald Colleen Bidlack, Emeralds Bob and Sandra Caraway, Diamond Ben and Paula Cooper, and Double Diamonds Ron and Dinah Stokes to terminated Crowns Leonard and Paula Hall.

Wayne Beaird sponsored his brother, Crown Ambassadors Dallas and Betty Beaird who sponsor nine Diamond legs. Five of those legs contain Crowns or above.

Beaird’s largest leg goes to Australia where Diamonds John and Dorothy Comyns sponsor their son, Australia’s first Crowns, Dave and Nadia Comyns.

Down-line from them are Executive Diamonds Russell and Gail Jacka, who sponsors Triple Diamonds Dr. “Jack” and Ying Zhou. When China opened up, they returned home and made the equivalent of Founders Crown Ambassador. There are over 400 Diamonds and above, including seven Crown Ambassadors and above, in their group.

Dave and Nadia also sponsor Executive Diamonds Bill and Rosemary Ainsworth. Out of this business come Founders Crown Ambassadors, Mitch and Deidre Sala who sponsor Indonesian Crown Robert Angkasa.

Down another Ainsworth leg (Nuyten) come Founders Crown Ambassadors, Peter and Debbie Cox. They come through Double Diamonds, Norman and Glenda Leonard, who sponsors Crown Ambassadors, Nusshold, Hans & Eva of Austria. Leonard also sponsors Triple Diamond Somers, Angie & Nilsson, Carl, who sponsors Cox.

Downline from Somers, Angie & Nilsson, Carl is Double Diamond Vagyi, James, who took the business back to his native Hungary where it has spread all over Eastern Europe. He has two Crown legs. One is Crown, Alexander and Inna Fedoseevi*.

The other goes to Founders Executive Diamond Nemeth, Irenke, to Crowns Attila and Katalin Gidofalvi (terminated in 2008 for rules violation – Zero Tolerance), who sponsored Natalia Yena*. She is a Founders Crown Ambassador in the Ukraine and Russia’s first and only Crown Ambassador.

Nemeth, Irenke also sponsors Double Diamond Bujwiccy, Izabela & Marek, from Poland, who sponsor Founders Crown Ambassadors Oleksiv Mautanov & Vira Arkhipova*.

Bujwiccy also sponsors Crowns Kharatin, Igor & Valeria* who sponsor Crown Ambassadors Demkura, Taras & Irina*.

Note: * All are from the Ukraine and are foster sponsored by Muller-Meerkatz, Peter & Eva, as is Vagyi, James.

A second Beaird leg goes through Diamonds John and Pat DeYoung to Founders Crown Ambassadors Jim and Nancy Dornan. They are part of the group that bought Stonelake’s business. They also helped Australian Diamonds, Basil and Leonie Harris buy their sponsor’s, Executive Diamonds, John and Gill Nuyten, business. (John and Gill, like the Jordans, are now missionaries.)

Beaird’s other three Crown legs are: Howard and Faye Vaughan, Dave & Carol Kendall, and Grant & Marcella Hedgepeth, who sponsor Crowns Wally & Joanne Sousa.

Stonelake’s third Crown leg is responsible for over 40% of Amway’s business in Japan. It first goes to Crowns Eiko and Shoji Tatsukami. Then, it goes on to Amway’s first Double Crown Ambassador, Kaoru Nakajima. Nakajima has many Crowns and above.

His fourth Crowns are Dick and Dee Ossinger. Dick is blind, but can still draw circles and explain the plan.

Leg 2

Double Diamonds, Mel & Shirley Kamstra.

Leg 3

Ja-Ri Corporation. Jay's and Rich's first three Diamond legs are personally sponsored. (Amway Corporation has also "sponsored" IBOs to jump-start businesses in several countries. Their first international business, Amway Australia produced a line of Diamonds. Amway Malaysia, with Founders Emerald Gary Giam, has produced Crowns and above.)

Leg 3.1

Emerald (and Dale Carnegie instructor), Walter Bass is Ja-Ri's largest leg, by far. He achieved that level in 1986, when his daughter became his third Platinum leg. He had two Diamond legs at the time of his death. Skip and Susan Ross bought Walter’s business from his heir, Phyllis Chesebro and her daughter, Deb. (They were Amway's first family business to go four generations deep! Deb can now be found chatting and offering encouragement to new IBOs on the (unofficial) "Amway Wiki" and "Amway Talk” internet sites.)

(Walter and Evelyn) Bass sponsored Crowns (Fred) and Bernice Hansen. Bernice is so well respected that she is known as “The First Lady of Amway”. (Note. Skip Ross, who was personally sponsored by Bob Stonelake, married Susan Hansen and went into partnership with Bernice and Susan’s sister, Karen and Jerry De Blaay.

One of Hansen’s legs has Amway’s second Crowns, Art and Ollie Charlton.

Another starts with Crowns, (Joe and Helyne) Victor (with son, Ron, who has also passed.) The family business is now run by granddaughter, Jenah. Their largest leg is Crowns (Jere and Eileen) Dutt (Amway’s first Diamond and Double Diamond Direct Distributors). The Dutts passed away leaving the business in the capable hands of their son, Jody, who has also passed. It is now run by their grandson Jere III.

Joe and Helyne also sponsored their son, Jody “Marker Man” Victor into the business. Jody and Kathy Victor are highly respected Crowns in their own right.

The Dutts have Crowns Robert and Terry Andrews, in depth.

Down another leg is Diamond Ted Elias. He had to follow an Amway supplied lead from Ohio to New York to sponsor Crown Ambassadors (Charlie) and Elsie Marsh, Amway’s first Triple Diamonds and first Crowns.

The Marshes have three Crown Ambassador legs. They sponsored Triple Diamonds Bill & (Jan) Campbell who have three Crown legs. One is a Founders Emerald leg with Crowns in both Canada and Puerto Rico.

Diamond (Ron & Margery) Schultz, (now, son Roland & Nancy) had an Emerald leg pursue a lead into French speaking Quebec, Canada. Out of that came Crowns Andre and Francoise Blanchard, who sponsored Crowns Michel and Cecile Chapdelaine.

Schultz, Ron also sponsored Puerto Rican Triple Diamonds Gerry and Maresa Herrera, who sponsor Crowns Tito and Gloria Bouraseau.

While visiting Amway HQ, in Ada, Michigan, Bill “discovered” Wally Buttrick, who became a Crown. Down-line from Wally are Crowns Vern and Judy Morse.

He also sponsors his brother-in-law, Crown Ambassadors Dan and (Bunny) Williams.

They sponsored Diamonds Robert and (Margaret) Echols, who sponsored Pepper and Diana Purpera, who sponsored Diamond Richard and Sherry Wright, who sponsored Diamond Elmer and (Martha) Gibson. One of their Emeralds moved to Germany and ended up sponsoring Founders Crown Ambassadors Peter and Eva Muller-Meerkatz. Their organization is responsible for developing most of Amway’s European business. As of 2008 they had over 450 Diamonds and above in their organization, with 28 of them being frontline. Many businesses credit them with being their foster sponsors. They have three Crown Ambassador legs.

Their first is Crown Ambassadors Michael & Gabby Strachowitz.

The second goes from Double Diamonds Willy and Dora Seyfried to Founders Crown Ambassador Max Schwarz, who sponsors his daughter, Crown, Anja Schwarz.

Max sponsors Founders Crown Ambassadors Willi Steiner and Maria Schleipfer, through Diamonds Hans and Olga Weibl.

The largest goes through Texas Diamonds Pat and (Liz) Shay, Double Diamonds John and Wanda Newberry, Double Diamonds Lew and Darlene Riggans, Diamonds John and Mariana Johnson to Diamonds Joe and Mary Logan. (The Logans were Amway’s first distributors who became Emeralds in two countries – US and UK.) The Logans took their business to the West Coast where it found its way to Executive Diamonds Pat and Betty Kaufmann, and then to Executive Diamonds Jim and Sharon Elliott. The Elliotts sponsored Founders Crowns Ron & Georgia Puryear.

One of Puryear’s legs goes through Diamonds Kim, Eugene & Sarah to Korean Founders Crown Ambassadors Kim, Leonard & Esther. (At the time of this writing, there were reported to be over 400 Diamonds down-line from them.)

Tim is also a Crown in Colombia. His group, through Executive Diamond Pedro Lizardi, is responsible for opening the Spanish market. For the last several years their group has been developing the business in the Caribbean and South America. Much of the Mexican market is due to the work of Executive Diamonds Carlos and Carmen Marin (terminated for ethics violations).

The Yagers personally sponsored Crowns Don and Ruth Storms (suspended/terminated for being involved in a Ponzi scheme).

Perhaps Yager’s largest group is down-line through personally sponsored Diamonds Dom and Pat Coniguliaro (terminated) – Founders Crown Ambassadors Bill and Peggy Britt. They have 12 Diamond legs.

One starts with an IBO that quit and left Bill to develop two Diamond legs. One of those goes to Crown Miller, Paul & Leslie, who have nine front-line Diamonds.

Another leg is responsible for much of Amway’s Indian business. It goes six deep before coming to Founders Executive Diamonds Kanti and Hemi Gala. Most of the Indians in the US are down-line from them and have numerous Diamonds and above throughout India. (Britt is also a Crown in India.)

Also down-line from Janz are Crown Ambassadors Bob and Joyce Schmidt.

Leg 3.3

Starts with Founders Emeralds (William “Bill” and Viola) Lent who have three Crown Ambassador legs. One goes to Crown Ambassadors Frank and Rita Delisle. Their business includes their two sons, Triple Diamonds Dennis and Sharon and Double Diamonds Frank and Barbara.

Their second leg starts with Diamonds Charles and Jean Crecelius. It then goes to Double Diamonds Brice and Ruth Douglas in Australia. Then, it skips over to Malaysia where Douglas is the international sponsor of Founders Triple Diamonds Gerald and Angela DeSilva. They, in turn, sponsor Foo Howe Kean. He is (1) Founders Crown Ambassador in Malaysia, (2) Crown Ambassador in Taiwan, and (3) Founders Crown Ambassador in China. He has over 800 Diamonds and above in his organization with over 30 being Crown Ambassadors.

DeSilva also has a second Crown Ambassador leg, Sunny Hsu and Debra Hsieh. They are Crown Ambassadors in Taiwan and Founders Crown Ambassadors in China.

DeSilva is foster sponsored by Diamonds, (Alfred) and Hamidah Hendroff, who are sponsored by Founders Emeralds Gary and Susan Giam. One of Giam’s three Diamond legs is Crown Ambassadors Sunny and Guat Hwa Ho.

Another is through Hendroff. Besides DeSilva, Hendroff also has a personal leg with many Diamonds. It starts with Founders Triple Diamonds Siew Fang and “Celia” Wong and goes to Founders Crown Ambassadors Kim Soon and Kwee Cho Lee.

Barry & Holly are also Double Crown Ambassadors in Taiwan and Founders Crown Ambassadors in China, as is their son, Liu Te Pei. They have over 2,000 Diamonds and above in their organization (most outside the US), including over 20 Crown Ambassadors! (Note: As of 2011, The North American and Caribbean area had recognized less than 2,000 Diamonds and “only” 15 Crown Ambassadors.)

The Beechers also sponsored Crowns Bill & Beth Vogel (who recently sold their business to the Beechers – Beecher #2 business).

Leg 3.4

Started with Diamonds Bill and Val Nichols and went to Crown Peter and (Audrey) Barbara Matz and their international organization. (Nichols was a California Nutrilite distributor before moving to Pennsylvania and joining Amway in 1959.)

Leg 3.5

May begin with Diamonds Roland and Edith Diehl (from Wisconsin) and then goes through a Sapphire to both Diamonds Bill and Sheila Merlo in Ontario, Canada and California Diamonds Clayton and Charlotte Overton and their international organization.

Leg 3.6

This leg appears to have joined Amway from Nutrilite. It begins in Colorado with Emerald (Seigfried) Tillotson. He sponsored Diamonds (Jesse and Alva) Williams. How it all started (with a line of five Emeralds)

At the head of the original Nutrilite line of sponsorship were Emeralds, W.J. “Bill” & Myrtle Lammi. They sponsored Emerald Phil Philyaw, who sponsored Emeralds Warren & Marion Fuller, who sponsored Founders Emeralds Basil & Lena Fuller, who sponsored Neal and Charlotte Maaskant.

Warren and Marion also sponsored Emerald Viola Polley, who sponsored Diamonds (Walt) & Jan Woods. Walt personally sponsored Crown Ambassadors Chuck and Jean Strehli. They, in turn, sponsor the Crown Ambassador partnership of Mitchel & Jan Burchfield and John & Gareth McCoy.

Note. This article was written using information gleaned from Amway publications, the internet, and international IBOs. Conversations with and correspondence from Emeralds and above proved very helpful in clarifying lines of sponsorship. Books, tapes, and functions also provided useful information.
