Brief History
JaRi Corporation was incorporated in September 1949. The name is a contraction of the names of it's founders, Jay Van Andel and Rich DeVos. Originally a distributorship with Nutrilite (formerly known as  California Vitamin Company), JaRi Corporation later also became the DeVos and Van Andel's Amway distributorship. Their original Nutrilite sponsor, Neal Maaskant maintained his position as the sponsor of the JaRi Amway distributorship.

JaRi and Amway Sales Corporation later merged to form Amway Corporation, however bonuses are still paid upline to the Maaskant estate, which is reportedly a Founders Emerald business.
+
Neal Maaskant, a second cousin of Jay Van Andel sponsored Jay and Rich DeVos in August 29, 1949 as distributors for Nutrilite Products, Inc.  In September, they incorporated as the Ja-Ri Corporation.  By 1958, Nutrilite was experiencing management problems. That summer, Jay and Rich decided they needed to develop a product line on the side to protect their distributors. In the fall the distributors voted to become the American Way Association. In early 1959, Amway Corporation came into official being. They broke away from Nutrilite in 1961. In 1972, Amway bought a controlling interest in Nurtilite. They now own it, outright.

Leg 1
 +
Their first leg begins with Emeralds Jack and Jean Maaskant.  This leg is responsible for a good portion of Amway’s Asian business.

In 1959, Rich DeVos and Jay Van Andel founded Amway Corporation. Says Rich DeVos, “We were just two guys from Ada, Michigan, USA who wanted to have a business of our own. We were two kids (it still feels like that sometimes) who were hungry for success and who wanted to give others the chance to be in business for themselves, too.” Our late founder, Jay Van Andel, said of the company, “Amway gets people into a new life of excitement, promise, profit, and hope.” Amway now operates in over 80 countries and territories around the world.
+
They sponsor Triple Diamonds Vince and Alice Gaffey, (together with son Tom and his wife Debbie they are Gaffey & Gaffey) who sponsor Diamonds Rubin and Loraine Seagren. They, in turn sponsor Founders Emeralds (Bill) and Julie (now with daughter, Grace) Jordan, who sponsored Bill’s brother Larry. (Larry and his wife Linda are retired Emeralds doing missionary work in Mexico.) A very young Larry Jordan sponsored a much older Amway legend, Bob Stonelake.

DeVos is a renowned speaker and author of four books, including: Believe!, Compassionate Capitalism, Hope from My Heart: Ten Lessons for Life, and Ten Powerful Phrases for Positive People. He has also owned a number of professional sports franchises, including the Orlando Magic of the NBA.
+
Diamonds, (Bob and Lois) Stonelake went on to develop five Diamond legs and then Bob sold his business and went into retirement. Four of those legs contain Crowns and above. One, personally sponsored Crown Ambassadors, John and Pat Hendrickson, is believed to have been part of a group of Diamonds who bought Bob’s business.

Van Andel was a lifelong advocate of free enterprise. Past Chairman of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Director of the Jamestown Foundation, U.S. Ambassador and Commissioner General to Genoa Expo '92 and Trustee of the Heritage Foundation. In his hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan, he was the founder of the Van Andel Institute for Education and Medical Research, founding Chairman of the Right Place Committee, and through the Jay and Betty Van Andel Foundation, contributed to significant community projects in economic development, health care, education and the arts.
+
A second leg goes down to Crowns, Wayne and Kay Beaird (along with sponsors and partners, son-in-law and Olympic champion Bob and movie actress Joan Richards). They sponsor Wayne’s brother, Crown Ambassadors Dallas and Betty Beaird who sponsor 9 Diamond legs. Five of those legs contain Crowns or above.

Maaskant Trust (Maaskant, Neal dec. & Charlotte dec.)
One includes Founders Crown Ambassadors Jim and Nancy Dornan. They are part of the group that bought Stonelake’s business. They also helped Australian Double Diamonds, Basil and Leonie Harris to buy their sponsor’s, Executive Diamonds, John and Gill Nuyten, business. (John and Gill, like the Jordans, are now missionaries.)

Ja-Ri Corporation. Their first three Diamond legs are personally sponsored. (Amway Corporation has also “sponsored” IBOs to jump-start businesses in several countries. Their first international business, Amway Australia produced a line of Diamonds. Amway Malaysia, with Emerald Gary Giam, has produced Crowns.)

Leg 3.1
 +
Emerald (and Dale Carnegie instructor), Walter Bass is Ja-Ri’s largest leg, by far. He achieved that level in 1986, when his daughter became his third DD leg. He had two Diamond legs at the time of his death. Skip and Susan Ross bought Walter’s business from his heir, Phyllis Chesebro and her daughter, Deb. (They were Amway’s first family business to go four generations deep! Deb can now be found chatting and offering encouragement to new IBOs on the (unofficial) “Amway Wiki, Amway Talk” internet site.) (Walter and Evelyn) Bass sponsored Crowns (Fred) and Bernice Hansen. (Note. Skip Ross, who was personally sponsored by Bob Stonelake, married Susan Hansen and went into partnership with Bernice and Susan’s two sisters, Karen and Marianne.)
 +

 +
One of Hansen’s legs has Amway’s second Crowns, Art and Ollie Charlton.
 +

 +
Another starts with Crowns, Joe and Helyne Victor. They sponsor son, Crowns Jody and Kathy Victor and Crowns (Jere and Eileen) Dutt (Amway’s first Diamond). The Dutts passed away leaving the business in the capable hands of their son, who has also passed. It is now run by their grandson.)
 +

The Marshes have three Crown legs. They sponsored Triple Diamonds Bill & (Jan) Campbell who also have three Crown legs. One is an Emerald leg with Crowns in both Canada and Puerto Rico.
 +

 +
Canadian Crowns Andre and Francoise Blanchard sponsor Crowns Michel and Cecile Chapdelaine. Puerto Rican Triple Diamonds Gerry and Maresa Herrera sponsor Crowns Tito and Gloria Bouraseau.
 +

 +

 +
He also sponsors his brother-in-law, Crown Ambassadors Dan and (Bunny) Williams. One of their Emerald legs goes to Germany and Founders Crown Ambassadors Peter and Eva Muller-Meerkatz. They are responsible for developing most of Amway’s European business. As of 2008 they had over 450 Diamonds and above in their organization, with 28 of them being frontline. Many businesses credit them with being their foster sponsors. They have three Crown legs. The first is Crown Ambassadors Michael & Gaby Strachowitz. The second is Founders Crown Ambassador Max Schwarz, who sponsors his daughter, Crown Anja Schwarz. She sponsors Founders Crown Ambassadors Steiner and Maria Schleipfer. She also foster sponsors Crown Ambassadors Hans and Eva Nusshold for Leonard in Australia. M-M’s third Crown leg goes through Diamond Hubertus Von Badewitz. Brief History

Founders Emeralds, (Neal and Charlotte) Maaskant (Maaskant Family Trust) receive the pass-up income from Ja-Ri. What follows is their legacy:

Leg 1

Their first leg begins with Emeralds Jack and Jean Maaskant. This leg is responsible for a good portion of Amway’s Asian business.

One includes Founders Crown Ambassadors Jim and Nancy Dornan. They are part of the group that bought Stonelake’s business. (John and Gill, like the Jordans, are now missionaries.)

A second Beaird leg goes to Australia where Diamonds John and Dorothy Comyns sponsor their son, Australia’s first Crowns, Dave and Nadia Comyns. Down-line from them are Executive Diamonds Russel and Gail Jacka, who sponsor Triple Diamonds Dr. “Jack” and Ying Zhou. When the Chinese market opened up, they returned home and made the equivalent of Founders Crown Ambassador. They have over 400 Diamonds and above, including seven Crown Ambassadors and above, in their group.

They also sponsor Executive Diamonds Bill and Rosemary Ainsworth. Out of this business come Founders Crown Ambassadors, Mitch and Deidre Sala who sponsor Indonesian Crown Robert Angkasa. Leg 3

Leg 3.1

One of Hansen’s legs has Amway’s second Crowns, Art and Ollie Charlton.

Another starts with Crowns, Joe and Helyne Victor. They sponsor son, Crowns Jody and Kathy Victor and Crowns (Jere and Eileen) Dutt (Amway’s first Diamond). Dutt has Crowns Robert and Terry Andrews, in depth. Amway’s first Triple Diamonds, Crown and Crown Ambassadors (Charlie) and Elsie Marsh, is down another Dutt leg. (Note. The Dutts passed away leaving the business in the capable hands of their son, who has also passed. It is now run by their grandson.)

The Marshes have three Crown legs. They sponsored Triple Diamonds Bill & (Jan) Campbell who also have three Crown legs. One is an Emerald leg with Crowns in both Canada and Puerto Rico.

Canadian Crowns Andre and Francoise Blanchard sponsor Crowns Michel and Cecile Chapdelaine. Puerto Rican Triple Diamonds Gerry and Maresa Herrera sponsor Crowns Tito and Gloria Bouraseau.

Campbell also sponsored Amway (ex)employee, Crown Wally Buttrick. Down-line from Wally are Crowns Vern and Judy Morse.

He sponsors Crowns Alexander and Lora Dobler and Crown Ambassador Renate Backhaus.

Williams has 10 more Diamond legs. The largest US leg goes through Diamonds Pat and Liz Shay, Double Diamonds John and Wanda Newberry and Lew and Darlene Riggans, and Diamonds John and Mariana Johnson and Joe and Mary Logan. (The Logans were Amway’s first Double Emeralds – US and UK.) Down-line from them are Executive Diamonds Pat and Betty Kaufmann and Jim and Sharon Elliott. The Elliotts sponsor Founders Crowns Ron & Georgia Puryear.

One of Puryear’s legs goes through Diamonds Eugene and Sarah Kim to Korean Founders Crown Ambassadors Leonard and Esther Kim. (At the time of this writing, there were reported to be over 400 Diamonds down-line from them.)

A second line goes through Diamond Steve and Cristie Cummins, Executive Diamonds Dave and Jan Severn, Diamonds Terry and Fran Woodhead, to Triple Diamonds Gary and Dorothy Duncan. They sponsor his brother, Crowns, Brad and Julie Duncan.

Puryear also sponsors Double Diamond Jack and Rita Daugherty. They sponsor Crown Leif Johnson. He has eight Diamond legs, including ex-wife, Crown, Beverly Sallee.

Marsh has 12 more Diamond legs, besides Campbell. One leg was taken to France by Crowns Joe and France Mas. Crowns, Robert and Nicole Belli are in their group.

A third down-line Crown is Founders Crown Ambassador Dexter and Birdie Yager. They have 15 Diamond legs.

One, of note, starts with Founders Emerald Bill and Martha Johnson. They sponsored Triple Diamonds Tom and (Carolyn) Payne, who sponsored Diamonds (Henry) and Pat (now, Tom and Pat Thornton), who sponsored Diamonds Roland and Molly Hughes, whose down-line, Executive Diamonds Seon Do and Myong Hyun Park sponsor New York Crown Ambassadors Seung Ho and Hyun Ja Kim.

Another starts with Yager’s first Diamonds, James and Francis Lewis. Down-line from them are Triple Diamonds Rick and Sue Setzer. Down-line from them are Double Diamonds Hal and (Susan) Gooch. They sponsor Double Diamonds Bill and (Hona) Childers. Down-line from them are Crowns Kenny and Donna Stewart. Also down-line from Childers are Double Diamonds Brig and Lita Hart. They sponsored Founders Diamond Steve and Anita Woods. Down-line from them is NFL All-Pro and Founders Crown Ambassador Tim and (Connie) Foley with seven US Diamond legs. Tim is also a Crown in Colombia. His group, through Executive Diamond Pedro Lizardi, is responsible for opening the Spanish market. Much of the Mexican market is due to the work of Executive Diamonds Carlos and Carmen Marin.

The Yagers personally sponsored Crowns Don and Ruth Storms.

Perhaps Yager’s largest group is down-line through Diamond Dom and Pat Coniguliaro – Founders Crown Ambassadors Bill and Peggy Britt. They have 12 Diamond legs.

One starts with an IBO that quit and left Bill to develop two Diamond legs. One of those goes to Crowns Paul and Leslie Miller who have nine front-line Diamonds.

Another leg is responsible for much of Amway’s Indian business. It goes six deep before coming to Founders Executive Diamonds Kanti and Hemi Gala. Most of the Indians in the US are down-line from them and have numerous Diamonds and above throughout India. (Britt is also a Crown in India.)

Yet another leg has international connections, through Executive Diamonds Rex and Betty Renfrow. Down-line from them are Executive Diamonds Angelo and Claudia Nardone and Ray and Joanne Mellilo, who sponsor Diamonds Edward and Elsie Vicinanza. Down-line from them are Emeralds Guo-Yuan “Matthew” Du and Ya-Qin Zhu. Dr. Du sponsored himself into China, where he became a Founders Crown Ambassador.

Leg 3.2

Jari’s second leg starts with Crowns Sterling and Evangeline Krause and has several Crowns and above. They went into partnership with son, Roger, and daughter-in-law, Ruth. Later, Roger took an executive position with Amway.

Down-line from these Minnesotans are Canadian Crowns, Gordon and (Elsie) Ross. They personally sponsor two Crowns Ambassador, Dick and (Bunny) Marks (Amway’s first Crown Ambassadors) and Jim and Sharon Janz.

Janz sponsored Executive Diamonds (Ben and Dorothy) Boreyko who sponsored Crowns Werner and Erna Gommeringer. Also down-line from Janz are Crown Ambassadors Bob and Joyce Schmidt.

Leg 3.3

Starts with Founders Emeralds (William “Bill” and Viola) Lent who have three Crown legs. One goes to Crowns Frank and Rita Delisle. Their business includes their two sons, Triple Diamonds Dennis and Sharon and Double Diamonds Frank and Barbara.

Their second leg starts with Diamonds Charles and Jean Crecelius. It then goes to Double Diamonds Brice and Ruth Douglas in Australia. Then, it skips over to Malaysia where Douglas is the international sponsor of Founders Triple Diamonds Gerald and Angela DeSilva. They, in turn, sponsor Foo Howe Kean. He is (1) Crown Ambassador in Malaysia, (2) Crown Ambassador in Taiwan, and (3) Founders Crown Ambassador in China. He has over 800 Diamonds and above in his organization with over 30 being Crown Ambassadors.

DeSilva also has a second Crown leg. Sunny Hsu and Debra Hsieh are Crown Ambassadors in Taiwan and Founders Crown Ambassadors in China. DeSilva is foster sponsored by Amway’s original Malaysia leg. That starts with Founders Emeralds Gary and Susan Giam. One of their three legs is Crown Ambassadors Sunny and Guat Hwa Ho. Another is DeSilva’s foster sponsors, Diamonds, (Alfred) and Hamidah Hendroff. Hendroff also has a leg with many Diamonds, including Founders Crown Ambassadors Lee Kim Soon and Kwee Choo.

A third Lent leg goes through Diamonds Fred and Bernice Rogers, Crowns Jerry and Trish Hicks, and Crowns Dennis and Kay Beecher to Founders Crown Ambassador Barry Chi and the dynamic Holly Chen. (They are also Double Crown Ambassadors in Taiwan and Founders Crown Ambassadors in China, as is their son. They have over 2,000 Diamonds and above in their organization, including over 20 Crowns Ambassadors!) The Beechers also sponsor Crowns Bill & Beth Vogel.

Leg 3.4

Starts with Diamonds Bill and Val Nichols and goes to Triple Diamonds Peter and (Audrey) Matz and their international organization. (Nichols was a California Nutrilite distributor before moving to Pennsylvania and joining Amway in 1959.)

Leg 3.5

May begin with Diamonds Roland and Edith Diehl (from Wisconsin) and then goes through a Sapphire to both Diamonds Bill and Sheila Merlo in Ontario, Canada and California Diamonds Clayton and Charlotte Overton and their international organization.

Leg 3.6

This leg appears to have joined Amway from Nutrilite. It begins in Colorado with Emerald (Seigfried) Tillotson. He sponsored Diamonds (Jesse and Alva) Williams. They sponsored their son, Triple Diamonds Alan and Pat Williams. They also sponsored Emeralds Dale and Dorothy Morgan who sponsor Diamonds Merle and Ardith Ford. Down-line from them are Crowns, Stan and Ruth Evans.

How it all started (with a line of five Emeralds)

At the head of the original Nutrilite line of sponsorship were Emeralds, W.J. “Bill” & Myrtle Lammi. They sponsored Emerald Phil Philyaw, who sponsored Emeralds Warren & Marion Fuller, who sponsored Founders Emeralds Basil & Lena Fuller, who sponsored Neil and Charlotte Maaskant.
